A device that draws pictures on paper based on commands from a computer. Plotters differ from printers in that they draw lines using a pen. As a result, they can produce continuous lines, whereas printers can only simulate lines by printing a closely spaced series of dots. Multicolor plotters use different-colored pens to draw different colors.

In de Nederlandse taal is de term "plotter" een algemeen geaccepteerd begrip. Ik laat deze term vrijwel altijd staan. In uitzonderlijke situaties wordt soms nog de vertaling of aanvulling "Elektronische tekentafel" gebruikt. Dit is eigenlijk een ouderwetse aanduiding.

Een plotter of elektronische tekentafel is traditioneel een apparaat, dat onder besturing van een computer tekeningen op papier zet. Moderne ontwikkelingen hebben het ook mogelijk gemaakt om met behulp van lasers, waterstralen, roterende mesjes en frezen ook totaal andere materialen te bewerken, zoals hout, kunststof, metaal en plakfolies.
