Principal Components Analysis (PCA), using the C2 Data Analysis program (Version 1.5.0), was applied on the normalized (percentage) dataset, in order to reveal the dominant morphotypes or morphotype groups and identify significant down-core trends in the data. PCA was applied on the total dataset as well as on each well separately. Before applying PCA to the BSP dataset a number of BSP morphotypes were grouped, based on close morphological similarities. This resulted in the formation of three groups that are represented in Figure 4 by respectively the green, yellow, and red colours. The remaining BSP morphotypes are grouped and represented in grey.
