Spanish term

Restitución civil de la justicia

Spanish to English Law/Patents Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
Hi, everyone.

I'm checking the subtitles for a short documentary about the civil war in Spain. One of the scenes discusses the moral responsibility of people involved in various atrocities. Now that the bodies of victims have been exhumed and identified, the narrator ponders what would have happened if the victims' dreams and hopes had come to fruition:

"En el tiempo de la restitución de los sueños, sea también una de las formas de la RESTITUCIÓN CIVIL DE LA JUSTICIA".

I'm not sure about how to render the last part of the sentence. I think it's saying that if their dreams are to come true, it's also a way of restoring civil justice.

I'd be grateful if someone could suggest a tidy way of expressing this.

Thanks in advance.

Best,

Dez

restoring justice in society (social justice)

No problems with FVS translation of the words, but IMO they might read a bit stiff and formal in accompanying a documentary narration. Obviously, that also depends on having the overall context as he indicated.
I'm originally from U.S. and we don't use civil that much in regular speech, social being more frequent, so I wanted to throw out this alternative.
So a possible translations could be:
The restoring their dreams may also be a means of restoring justice in society (or social justice).
Restoring their dreams could also be a means for restoring justice in society (social justice).
Gives you some flexibility with wording vis a vis "may be a means of/for". Maybe "could/may also serve to" as an alternative, for instance.

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Sorry that I couldn't give much more context, but there wasn't really all that much else to go on. Given the general tone and register of the documentary, I think your suggestions are probably the most appropriate. Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. Best, Dez"

civil restoration of justice/restoration of civil justice

Seems to me but a bit more context would help.

Civil restitution (in law/the justice system)

I don't think this is about the restoration of justice at all, but about a specific legal concept: civil restitution, which is a form of compensation for crime, a making-good to the victim, what is sometimes called restorative justice. It is usually, though not necessarily, financial. See:

So in my understanding, 'de la justicia' is just there to indicate or underline that it is a legal concept, and you could use a phrase such as I suggested, 'in law'/'in the justice system' or simply do without it - and call it 'a form of civil restitution'. I think that would do.

piecing together of civil justice

Fine suggestions have been made but I thought I'd add another, trying to follow the asker's understanding and steer clear of formal terminology:

The rekindling/rebuilding of (their) dreams would shape a building block towards the piecing together of civil justice.
