Lit. 'an ace', Latin sing. 'as'. It was a small bronze coin. Orig. it meant a much heavier weight of bronze, but through the coining of subdivsions from the mid 3rd cent. BCE and subsequent devaluations, it had come to mean a sum of little worth in class. Lat.
