Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) transmits
and receives logic or data from intelligent electronic controls
(IEDs) and sensors on electrical equipment and instrumentation
devices in the utility and telecommunication on industrial
applications. Power system elements ranging from polemounted
switches to entire power plants can be controlled
remotely over long distance communication links. Remote
switching
, telemetering of grids (showing voltage, current,
power, direction, consumption in kWh, etc.), even automatic
synchronization is used in some power systems.

neutral  Tony M: 'field switching' cannot really be compared to 'remote switching'; I suspect this is more about swapping modules 'on site', 'switching' being commonly used in AE where we might say 'swapping' or 'exchanging' in BE.

-> Maybe... I ventured the OMS does remote gear switching, but it could be field crews manually swapping equipment. More on OMSs: http://www.hometownconnections.com/assets/APPA-Academy-Webin...

agree  Daryo: but not with "remote" switching - it's done by crews operating "in the field" thus this name.

-> Thanks, I realise I have mis-(over-)interpreted the field bit. Crews in the field is indeed more appropriate.
