English term

rolls over

English to French Bus/Financial Finance (general)
Bonjour,

Comment traduiriez-vous l'expression demandée dans la phrase ci-dessous ?

Sideways markets present challenges for investors, xxx continues: “For those who embrace a passive index approach to investing, the results could be uninspiring and those people contemplating a trading strategy - buying a stock and selling it before it rolls over - have to admit that only a very small percentage of people are able to do this profitably.”

Merci d'avance.

avant rollover/prorogation de sa position, qui paraît évident quand on lit le lien fourni dans la réponse. Par contre rollover semble être l'expression consacrée dans le milieu boursier francophone.

English term (edited): before it rolls over

avant la prorogation de sa position

'sa' refers to the stock in question

En finance, la position est la quantité d'un titre financier qui est soit détenue (ce qui constitue une position longue), soit empruntée (ce qui constitue une position courte) par une personne ou un trader. Une position est donc ouverte ou en cours tant qu'une transaction opposée ne viendra pas la compenser.

What is a rollover?

In trading, a rollover is the process of keeping a position open beyond its expiry.

Many trades have an expiry date attached to them, at which point the position will automatically close and any profits or losses will be realised. In some circumstances, however, the trade can be rolled over. This means that profits or losses will be realised and the trade gets a new expiry. Often, a rollover will come with an associated charge.

Un rollover (ou prorogation) est l'action de conserver une position ouverte après son échéance. Ce terme est généralement utilisé pour le forex pour expliquer l'intérêt potentiel pouvant être gagné ou facturé en conservant une position en overnight.

English term (edited): before it rolls over

avant son repli

avant que l'action ne cesse de grimper et entame une baisse

because in this precise context they also talk about passive investing, I sense that it is likely that here it is not about futures, and that 'roll over' does not have here the technical meaning it has in futures and commodities, but is a colloquial way of saying that the stocks stops going up and reverses course
