This sentence is reported in several handwritten letters of XVI century. These letters were written by relatives of muslim slaves captured during sea battles in Mediterranean sea and addressed to those slaves. The sentence should relate to a request for money to pay the freeing of the captive. I thought the sense is that "he bound himself for forty scutes"
