士为知己者死,女为悦己者容。 Thank you all for your help. With xiaoyanchen's reference, I also found the translation from "新时代汉英大辞典".

Proposed translations

29 mins

a valor will die for his best friend, a lady will make-up to appease herself.

Declined
my try...
士为知己者死,女为悦己者容。
a valor will die for his best friend, while a lady will make-up to appease herself.

士 could be translated as scholar, knight or warrior, but any one of these should be courageous enough for them not to be afraid of death.

OK, thanks for Bin's correction, here my revised rendition....

a valor will die for his best friend, while a lady will make-up to appease her admirer.

neutral Bin Tiede (X) : 女为悦己者容 appease herself, or someone who appreciates her beauty?

Now, I get it. How about "a lady will make-up to appease her admirer"?
neutral chica nueva : valour = 英勇、勇猛; appease = 使(某人)平息、抚慰、满足 (朗文进阶词典)

Thanks! valour = 勇士 too.
neutral Xiaohong Zhou : I also think that "悦己者" means the lady's admirer.

There is a ready translation in 汉英大辞典 for your reference:

"A gentle man will die for the patron who recognizes his worth, a girl will doll herself up for the man who loves her."

Hope this helps.

agree Sze Kwan Chan (X) : This is correct in meaning, but I don't like the connotations implied by the word: "doll"
