agree Samuel Murray : Take note that "hello" and "hallo" is often pronounced exactly the same way, but the Afrikaans version is written with an "a".

hallo

Just want to add, "goeie dag" (lit "good day") can be used anytime of day, though usually "goeie naand" (lit "good evening") is used towards evening or during the night. "Goeie nag" (lit "good night")is used for saying goodbye in the evening.
