The 1st aim is to validate the two step screening procedure by GP and practice nurse against the “Gold standard” of elaborate geriatric assessment carried out by a geriatrician or trained physician assistant at a geriatric outpatient clinic. As proven in several meta-analyses, comprehensive geriatric assessment by geriatricians (or specialised staff trained by a geriatrician) is effective in selecting those elderly patients who benefit from in-hospital treatment and preventive home visits (1, 2, 16, 20). Therefore, this comprehensive geriatric assessment by the geriatric team may be considered as the best available gold standard for targeting health care interventions to frail elderly.
