Meestal ga je hiervoor onder narcose of krijg je een plaatselijke verdoving. Na het inbrengen van de bronhouders maakt de bestralingsarts een MRI-scan of CT-scan van het gebied dat bestraald wordt. Op de beelden van de scan ziet de arts de precieze plek van de bronhouders. Hij of zij tekent op die beelden nauwkeurig in waar de straling moet komen. Met de informatie van de scan berekent de arts hoelang het radioactieve materiaal op welke plaatsen in de bronhouders moet blijven. Je krijgt de bestraling via een apparaat waarin een kleine radioactieve bron zit. Dit apparaat heet een afterloading-apparaat. Een computer stuurt het apparaat aan. De arts voert via de computer de gegevens voor de bestraling in. De bestraling gebeurt daarna automatisch. De bronhouders worden met dunne slangen aan het afterloading-apparaat verbonden. Via deze slangen kan het radioactieve materiaal van het afterloading-apparaat naar de bronhouders. A second needle is implanted anteriorly into the base of tongue for creating the anterior leg of the loop – therefore distance and position of the needle related to the posterior insertion channel is important. It is advised, at the beginning of the learning curve, to implant both needles first and control the distance and parallelism of them before inserting the plastic tube leaders and pulling through the tissue and completing the loop. The ideal distance apart of the two legs is 25 mm. Less distance results in frequent kinking of the loop. The two or three other sagittal loops are implanted with the same method, paying great attention to keeping them parallel.
