"La négligence (du cultivateur) étouffe le bon grain !"
ou :
"Un peu de négligence et les mauvaises herbes étouffent le bon grain !"

: The English speaks of the sowing, not the growing - I think it's an important difference // The meaning is "if you do not sow carefully, then fools will grow" i.e. for people, projects etc, it's the start that counts (parents, planning, initial choice)

Are you sure? I do not agree! Indeed: "fools will grow" // Sorry, again, but "to heed" means "to pay attention to" so in other words: "if you do not pay attention to what you saw, fools will grow". Why do you want to skip the first part of the proverb?

Loving the irony considering you yourself put "you reap what you sow and its variants" nicely done :-) The idea does seem to be "be careful what you start" and this is a well known saying in French.
