Hammer-type chuck From my past experience (40 years ago) - the chuck is closed/opened with a forceful & fast jerk of the outer rim and, if that does not do the job, with a blow of a machinist hammer (or of a heavy piece of pipe). That is, there is no chuck key to loose, misplace, wear out. The chuck mechanism is rigid enough (RIDGID !) to withstand such merciless hammer blows many times. So "Hammer-type chuck" was abbreviated to "hammer chuck".

Don't misunderstand me... ....I was referring to meirs post, where he pointed out that my document may be the result of a bad translation from German, and I believe it is an approximate translation from spanish.... Thank you FX for the reference!

hammer chuck I don't see why it would be a bad translation. The reference I posted is from Ridgid threading machines; Ridgid is an American company, part of the Emerson group.

Bad translation... ...probably from spanish (plato de mordaza) wich would be mandrin à mors.
The threading machine gots two chucks, the rear chuck and the hammer chuck... hammer refers to the chuck and not to a previous term..

more context please Maybe "hammer" belongs to the previous term, like "rotating hammer chuck" or something like this. Bad translation to English (e.g., from German) in the original text must not be excluded.
