Quenching an austenitized ferrous alloy in a medium at a temperature in the upper part of the martensite range, or slightly above that range, and holding it in the medium until the temperature throughout the alloy is substantially uniform. The alloy is then allowed to cool in air through the martensite range.

Warmbadhärten/Warmbadabschrecken ist ein Wärmebehandlungsverfahren zum unterbrochenen Abkühlen von Stählen in einem Salzbad bei Temperaturen knapp oberhalb der Martensitstarttemperatur. Dabei wird das Ziel verfolgt, den Abkühlungsprozess zu verlängern, damit sich die Temperaturen von Rand und Kern ausgleichen können. Auf diese Weise werden der Verzug, die Rissbildung und die Eigenspannungen reduziert.
