Shalom - שלום

Shalom, with the stress on the last syllable, is a nice all-purpose greeting in Hebrew. It means peace but is used where English speakers would use hello, and even goodbye.

I agree with Sue's answer (see above) but would like to add Ahalan

Ahalan is the casual "low brow" common way people great each other in Israel. Shalom is reserved for someone you meet for the first time, a formal greeting or a formal meeting. Ahalan is casual. Ahalan is fun.

You are right and wrong. It IS reserved for someone you meet for the first time, but not only. Ahalan is casual
