The Design is two dimensional (mowa o YEllow Submarine). When I was animating the Meanies stuff, it had more three-dimensional feeling to it and the Meanies were fun to to animate. They were real Meanies. The BEatles were somewhat different...
An audience looking at the film (Yellow Submarine) will immediately understand the Blue Meanies, you know the heavy landlords, heavy politicians, the lawnmakers, and all that sort of thing. People seem to cheer when they're defeated.

Of course everyone knows that the Blue Meanies are those mean furry blue guys that were killing the peace in the Beatles movie "Yellow Submarine". Or if you didn't know, you do now.
Why Blue Meanies? Well, System 7 was "Blue". We were mean (we were also known as the "arrogant bastards"). Blue Meanies were actually characters in the Beatles movie "Yellow Submarine". There were also Apple Bonkers, which became the name of an important server which our team used.
