The advent of high technology scanning has lead both patients and doctors to tend to place undue emphasis upon structure. Patients must be taught to put the test results of structure into context. The function of the back, for example, is not explained only by the visualised bones, discs and nerves on an MRI scan. A time will be reached when the likelihood of futher investigation revealing any treatable pathology is so small that a judgement has to be made whether to do it at all. This should be discussed openly with patients. Ultimately the investigation has to influence the decision regarding tratment to be worth while doing. If treatment will not change following a particular investigation, then it is debatable whether that investigation should be done at all.
