Before completing the assembly of a core barrel, it should be determined whether the drop ball is to be run in place or dropped from the surface after the bottom is reached. If extensively circulation is necessary such as caving holes or where fill can settle on bottom, it may be necessary to circulate through the inner tube until bottom is reached. If this is the case, the drop ball should be left out of the barrel, allowing full circulation through the inner tube while washing to bottom.

This will allow the fluid circulation to pass through the inner tube and keep it flushed clean. After the bottom is clean, the barrel should be raised several feet off bottom while circulating to insure the inner barrel clean. When the ball is dropped to its seat in the barrel, the circulation fluid passes around the outside of the inner tube in the conventional manner.

Once the ball has been dropped, replace the TDS and pump the ball down at a good circulation rate. Allow 1 minute per 1000 feet. While the ball is falling, record the pump rate and stand pipe pressure. As the ball nears bottom, slow the pumps to allow the ball to be properly seated. As soon as the ball is seated, record the increase in stand pipe pressure and return to bottom.
