What is "bank masse"?

A masse (e is accented) shot is one in which the cue ball is made to travel in a curve. It is effectuated by aiming the cue stick vertically at the cue ball. It requires a great deal of skill.

A bank masse is a masse shot that caroms of one of the cushions (banks).

Thanks, James. You are right-and I met him while I tended a pool hall during my college days in Berkeley, many years ago. By the way, there was another Willie, Willie Hoppe, before Mosconi, who was also a master.
