transparency, lamination, mask
I have a gut feeling this word cannot be substituted in your context. This would refer to a plastic sheet (or a computer mask) superimposed on another visual field as a transparency (such as may be found in anatomy books).

Overlay Network (computing)
4.2. OVERLAY ID
The overlay ID is a string that identifies an overlay network. It can be used as a key to look up the attributes of an overlay network. The overlay ID should be a globally unique
identifier. However, HyperCast does not assume or enforce a particular format of the overlay ID. The following are guidelines for creating unique overlay IDs.

: '...peer to peer lookup overlays. These overlays locate objects in the system..' www.pmg.lcs.mit.edu/~rodrigo/robust-agenda.pdf I must admit I didn't think it was the software meaning(in this case),but I do think it is most likely now

literal meaning also used by gold smiths, artists and for techniques in other fine arts
In fine arts, goldsmiths, artists and other fine artists overlay (and apply overlays of materials). These are sometimes semi-transparent or just going on top of part or all the layer beneath the overlay. The idea is similar to Parrot's point about transparencies in medical textbooks, laminations, or displays added to a visual field etc, which are also overlays used in other situations.
I'm only adding this in case it is useful in finding a word to translate computer software overlays (assuming it is the computer option, as I now assume, rather than an option to display superimposed information on the screen, which is what I thought at first). I presume in software design, components or activities are being overlaid in a way that uses Parrot's examples and these.
Apologies to Parrot for not realizing (for a while)that her answer applies to software overlays (if I understand it correctly now) just as much as to any other overlays - I agree about the problem of direct substitution.
If it is software overlays presumeably there will be a technical word in the target language (unless the English word is "borrowed",as is sometimes the case with IT terms).

It could really be other sorts of overlay, each with different words (as Parrot says).
