Spotted owl - Fleckenkauz
I could not find any German websites for strix occidentalis caurina (although strix occidentalis appears in quite a few).
You might wish to paraphrase and say s.th. like
"Northern Spotted Owl (strix occidentalis caurina, eine Fleckenkauz-Subspezies)"
From http://www.sou.edu/library/jim/wildlife/primer.htm :
As I write, the Pacific Northwest is the middle of one of the biggest biological and political controversies of all time and it is centered around a rather meek, mild mannered bird: the northern spotted owl. The northern spotted owl is a subspecies of the spotted owl. When a subspecies is classified, a third distinguishing Latin or Greek name is applied to the scientific name. The spotted owl's scientific name is Strix occidentalis and the northern spotted owl's scientific name is Strix occidentalis caurina.

Yes, it is definitively Fleckenkauz. Don't hesitate to use this term. You can stick to uel's explanation. The Latin name he wrote is absolutely right. However, I think in your context it will also be okay not to add the Latin name.
