Non-PRO German to English Other Food & Drink recipe
Ein ***belegtes Sandwich*** mit Salami, Tomaten und Mozzarella

Zubereiten:

1. Salatblätter waschen. Bauernbrot mit Mayonnaise bestreichen. Vier Brotscheiben mit jeweils 1 Salatblatt belegen.

2. Gurken längs in Scheiben schneiden und auf die Salatblätter legen. Zwiebeln abziehen, würfeln und darüberstreuen. Salami in nicht zu dünne Scheiben schneiden und auf die Brote verteilen.

3. Tomaten waschen, in Scheiben schneiden, auf die Salamischeiben geben und mit Basilikumblättchen bestreuen.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

In American English this is definitely an open-faced sandwich
and obviously in BE an open sandwich

Sandwiches have come a long way... ... since the Earl of the same name wanted a snack he could eat without leaving the card table. Open, club, double-decker, triple-decker, toasted, panini, ciabatta & baguettes (open and covered), croque-monsieur, Welsh rarebit and even the German invention Hawaii Toast, are all considered to be variations on the theme of sandwiches.

BTW: did anyone else notice that the recipe leaves out the mozarella?

a misnomer a sandwich as I understand it is made of 2 slices/pieces of bread with with meat, veg or whatever between. What is being described here is a 'Belegtes Brot'.

unbelegte Sandwiches gibt es nicht. Der AT ist insofern schlecht formuliert. Richtig sollte es m.E. heißen, 'ein mit XX und YY belegtes Sandwich'.

The dish consist of four slices of bread on a plate with basil as the final topping also to make it look pretty. Would be a shame to cover this with a slice of bread!

neutral writeaway : where do you see that they mean an open sandwich??? /2 slices of bread per sandwich is the norm. Sandwich usually means ingredients between 2 slices of bread. The whole world isn't an uitsmijter...... = 2 sandwiches (1 slice on top, 1 on bottom)

Hi Michele, makes it sound classier, too - and its in the colours of the Danish flag - 4 slices with red topping arranged with a gap between them on a white platter :-)
