The phrase is used by Helmut Lauer in his book "Zweibruecken am Westwall" to describe a B-werk bunker near Zweibruecken. The entire sentence is: "Es ist das einzige der ZWer B-werks mit einem ausgelagerten Beob.- Turm verbunden deruch einen ca. 80 m langen Gang."

Comment: "External observation towers fits the context of the rest of the passage quite well. The structures were, however, more like dome shaped turrets than like towers. 'Outlying' is also a very good choice as these observation turrets were sometimes separated from the main bunker by some distance, and were connected to it by a tunnel."
