As you suggest, ¥"tilt detection¥" is not bad IF the screw raises its head or tail above the level. But ¥"gradient detection¥" is beside the point in this case, because it commonly means ¥"勾配検出,¥" which reminds us gradual change of some quantity.

Both "slant detection" and "diagonal ditection" (sic) sound odd to me. In particular, the latter sounds worse since its predicative clause "detection is diagonal" does not make any sense. In addition, there are only 67 examples of "slant detection" and 19 examples of "diagonal detection" in Google.
Instead of these above, "tilt detection" and "gradient detection" are much better. In fact, we can find 217 examples of "tilt detection" and 334 examples of "gradient detection" in Google, and these show that they are more often used and that they may be more natural.

the meaning of oblique is neither parallel nor perpendicular. in direction; slanting or deflected. i hope it will help you.
