Surrogate? Ersatz? I think I'll go for 'substitute' instead. I can't come up with anything better than this. I love Polish when it comes close to being so perfectly awkward. Hope somebody can help here

Wykonanie zobowiązania w zasadzie polega na spełnieniu ustalonego świadczenia według treści tego zobowiązania przy jednoczesnym zaspokojeniu wierzyciela. Prawo cywilne przewiduje jednak inne możliwości wykonania zobowiązania, które nazywa się surogatami.
Surogaty wykonania zobowiązania są konstrukcjami prowadzącymi do wygaśnięcia zobowiązania w odmienny sposób niż spełnienie świadczenia, ale z zaspokojeniem interesu wierzyciela.
