С "сокрушенно" мне не очень понятно как быть, потому что to shake one's head in dismay у меня уже через строчку. :-(

regretfully?
My dictionary gives "contrition" and "grief" as meanings for сокрушение.
For the first, "regretfully" means much the same as contritely, and I prefer it; if it is the second meaning, just "sadly" might do.
