Spanish term

pozo de oxidación

Spanish to English Science Environment & Ecology
This is from a document describing the facilities at a biological station in the Amazon. They get rid of organic wastes in their pozo de oxidación. I guess it is essentially a compost pile, but is there a more technical term? I haven't been able to find one. Thanks for your help.

Discussion

John Rawlins Aug 16, 2007:
Yes, I agree that it sounds a bit too complex for the middle of the jungle. However, the carbon filters are optional!
1279 (X) (asker) Aug 16, 2007:
El manejo de los residuos orgánicos se hace mediante un pozo de oxidación, donde se acumulan los desperdicios. Una vez que el pozo se llena se tapa y se apertura otro a una distancia prudente del primer claro donde se encuentra la cocina/comedor.

oxidation pond

Hi, Clare. This seems to be it. A bit more context ... like a longer piece of the sentence ... would help make this more certain.

Ahh...gracias. I think your added context confirms my initial suggestion.

The US Environmental Protection Agency says:

"Oxidation pond: A man-made (anthropogenic) body of water in which waste is consumed by bacteria, used most frequently with other waste-treatment processes; a sewage lagoon.

Also see: "OXIDATION POND: A holding area where organic wastes are broken down by aerobic bacteria [EPA]. A receiving water body into which sewage is pumped, ..."

"...sewage and other organic wastes. Treatment occurs mainly through aerobic and ... system associated with the simple technology of the oxidation pond, ..."

These sentences sound like they describe the 'pozo de oxidación' that you're asking about.

OXIDATION PIT. I also find references to this term, although far fewer...but this might be just the thing in the middle of the jungle. "The first application of SBR technology dated from more than 50 years ago as a so called oxidation pit. "

COMPOSTING PIT. Another possibility. "Temperatures in the composting pit range on average from 140 to 150 F."

"In this method a composting pit is made, every day it is filled little by little with layers of dung, vegetable waste, green leaves and other farm wastes ..."

"The Chinese rural composting pit method uses a passive aeration approach through ..."

This might be the best fit... although, then again, here's another example in support of oxidation pit: "Generally the refuse from hog farms is treated in oxidation pits, to be used thereafter in the meadows as a fertilizer without the risk of polluting the environment."

I think you could get away with either one.

Example sentence:

Conventional dairy farm oxidation pond systems consist of an anaerobic pond ... in the most favourable sequence for wastewater treatment

Within an oxidation pond heterotrophic bacteria degrade organic matter in the sewage ...

Note from asker:
I hadn't heard of an oxidation pond...hmmm...but there is no mention of liquid in this pozo, so I'm not sure.
Yes, I think I'm leaning towards using "composting pit." I think this term would at least be accurate, but may be a lower register than "pozo de oxidación." I don't know. Thanks for putting so much thought into the question! I appreciate the help.
Peer comment(s):

agree Carol Gullidge : I'm tending -> oxidation pit. The trouble with a composting pit is that there's no room for the oxidación element (it's pretty stuffy down there!)

septic tank with air inlet

Septic tanks (in Spain anyway) have traditionally been closed to contact with air. However, new building regulations in many regions specify an air inlet with a charcoal filter fitted to eliminate odours. The air inlet accelerates the decomposition process by allowing more oxygen to enter the tank. I have had the pleasure of watching these fitted and cleaned.

I am not sure what planning regulations in the Amazon are like but I would guess this is what they mean.

Perhaps 'septic pit with air inlet' better catches the essence.
Note from asker:
Interesting, John. I did not know that. (As far as I know, the septic tanks in my area are all closed.) I think this research station is extremely rudimentary, though. I got the impression that they literally dig pits and throw stuff in! I can't imagine they have carbon filters.

oxidizing pit

I'd say oxidizing pit (a hole). I also thought in a shaft, but this is more specifically a mining term. Also could be a sump, but I think sump is more an oil collector.

You said it: they dig pits!

oxidation pool

If this includes human waste, then this will be prettyy liquid (as in a cesspool)

BUT BEWARE: "oxidation pool" can also refer to other things in different contexts - which doesn't necessarily make this use wrong.
