Italienisch > Englisch: The Church of the Virgin of Carmel in Noto, Sicily General field: Kunst/Literatur Detailed field: Architektur
L'autore della bella chiesa sembra essere ignoto e tuttavia alcune fonti riferiscono che questi possa essere stato il Gagliardi. Attraverso una cronaca di Russo Ferruggia sappiamo però che gli esecutori materiali dell'opera furono i capomastro Filippo sortino e Corradino Randazzo nel 1743;
I quattro altari di S.Lucia, dei SS.Martiri, di S.Teresa e di S.Paolino, sono costruiti in muratura e sovrastati da quattro grandi tele rappresentanti nell'ordine: la prima una grandiosa scena del martirio di Santa Lucia, la seconda la scena del supplizio dei Santi Martiri, la terza la Gloria del Carmelo col Cristo e la Madonna raffigurati in due scene della vita delle Carmelitane Teresa D'avila e Maddalena de'Pazzi e la quarta un santo vescovo in gloria posto su una imbarcazione in alto mare. Pare si tratti del Santo Carmelitano Andrea Corsini. Tutte e quattro le tele sono state attribuite al pittore netino Costantino Carasi;
Übersetzung - Englisch The church of the Virgin of Carmel can be defined as "a brushstroke in mystic tradtion" of the religious order that has its origins in 11th century Palestine (Mount Carmel). It is different from the other churches in terms of dramatic effect granted by its placement on the end of the long road of Montevergine and the silence of prayer of the Carmelite order. The churches of Saint Dominic and Saint Clare do not appear as majestic since they exist in more limited context. The author of this beautiful church is unknown though some sources suggest Gagliardi. By way of a report by Russo Ferruggia it is known however, that the builders were the master builders Filippo Sortino and Corradino Randazzo in 1743. The layout is that of a Greek cross, probably utilized to obtain maximum effect and an ample sacred area at the entrance. The building's facade, concave toward the inside, has a single door topped by a large heraldic shield depicting
the Carmelite coat of arms (Mount Carmel among 3 stars and the Jerusalem cross among 4 smaller crosses) supported by two angels.
Further examination of the facade shows three overlapping orders of various dimensions. The first contains 4 columns with Corinthian capitals; the second is shorter and is located between two Baroque spirals. The third is made up of a bell wall (pierced belfry) adorned by splendid decorations (vases and flame torches) which repeat on the Baroque swirls. The numerous beautiful gilded sculptures on the inside do not take away from the wooden side altar tables from the 1600s. Elegant plaster decorations on the walls are the work of Salvatore Cultrera. One of the more original and most fascinating parts of the church is the sacristy, which has a white stone wash basin dating from the 1700s. It was originally located in the convent sacristy. From the same time, from Noto Antica, are two Holy Water fonts at the beginning of the central aisle, one of which is white stone and the other asphalt stone. The four altars of Saint Lucy, the Holy Martyrs, Saint Teresa and Saint Paolino are constructed of masonry and above them are 4 enormous canvas images: martyrdom of Saint Lucy, agony of the Holy Martyrs, Glory of Carmel with Christ and the Madonna depicted in two scenes from the life of Carmelite sisters Saints Teresa D'Avila and
Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, and lastly a holy bishop in glory placed in a ship on the high sea - Saint Andrea Corsini. All four are attributed to painter and Noto native Costantino Carasi. Concerning the altars, three are decorated in oil and are in line with the style of the church. The fourth is white marble markedly veined. The side chapels are dedicated one to the Crucifixion, the other Saint Sebastian; however, the latter used to contain a statue of an anonymous saint but now welcomes one of the Sacred Heart. There is an exquisite choir of wood above the
choir loft and a wooden pulpit to the right side of the nave, a beautiful statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a wooden crucifix from Noto Antica. The most interesting part of the church is the chancel, where, the apse is filled with magnificent plaster embellishments clearly from the 17th century. As already mentioned, the main altar is splendid, created of marble. The tabernacle is dominated by powerful pink marble columns which support the entablature and is richly carved with superb bas reliefs and polychrome or gilded plaster ornamentation. In the
center is the most interesting work of art in the church: the large ciborium (a symbol of the holy mountain of the venerated Immaculate Mother of Carmel) which contains the exquisite statue of the "Madonna of Carmel" attributed to Antonino del Monachello (16th century) that was miraculously saved from destruction in the most recent earthquake. The most precious pictoral work of art in the church is the marvelous fresco on the vault depicting "The Triumph of Mary over the heresies of Arianism and Nestorianism"; it is attributed to the students of Catania native Olivio Sozzi.

Ausgangstext - Italienisch Luci e trasparenze

Übersetzung - Englisch Lights and Transparency
The emotion from light, which, as it flows through the space of a house, makes it pleasant and cozy, had a decisive role in the choices made by the people in the three stories covered in this issue: for Carla Fendi, fluidity and transparency were the determining factors in her choice of furnishing and materials (among which glass is dominant) for her open and sunny beach house at Sabaudia, Italy (page 44). Also the home of Paola Marzotto in Saint Tropez, France (page 84) is bathed in light, a characteristic that fascinated one of the homes' first owners, the French Fauvist painter Henri Manguin, who acquired it because of its beauty and colorful surroundings on the French Riviera. Paola’s home is arranged in such a fashion that light, in every season, always plays that same role – that of fascination. Fascination explodes at Ibiza, Spain, where the sun plays with the spaces of a typical country residence creating geometric designs of sun and shade both inside and out.
The commonality of the other two stories in this issue are the desire to change life and start on a new adventure. One of these stories is shared with us by Riccardo and Massimo, both from Viareggio, who have decided to leave their jobs and restore an old farmhouse in Camaiore, Italy. They've turnd it into the Locanda al Colle Bed and Breakfast, where they accommodate those on vacation who want the feel of having a house of their own with a few professional services included. Another exemplary story is that of Luigi Scognamiglio that, along with his wife Alessia, manages a natural cosmetics company Officinali di Montauto (page 24). Botany and the therapeutic value of the extracts from plants has interested them since they were young. After graduating with an MBA from Chicago and Maremma, the desire to develop a plan to create an Italian product steeped in tradition had already come to maturity.
The experts at VilleGiardini sifted through many houses this month located between the lakes of Vico and Bolsena to find restored farmhouses: on page 155 are the most interesting opportunities.
You Know What I Mean). Questa stagione fini` pero` malinconicamente con With The Jan Hammer Group (1977) e There And Back (1980), che annovera ancora qualche pezzo brillante (The Pump, Final Peace). e Jeff Beck dimenticato dal grande pubblico che gli preferiva Eric Clapton.
Gli hanno fatto seguito You Had It Coming (2000) e Jeff (Epic, 2003).

Übersetzung - Englisch Possibly the most influential guitarist in the history of Rock Music, one could say that rock music played with an electric guitar was invented by Jeff Beck. It was through him that the distortions, feedback, and many other techniques, that the rest of rock music did not rediscover until much later, became popular. Jeff Beck left the band Yardbirds in 1966 after experimenting with every type of dissonant technique. He put together a "supergroup" with pianist Nicky Hopkins, drummer Mickey Waller, bassist Ron Wood and singer Rod Stewart; the group got its start with Hi Ho Silver Lining (written by Scott English & produced by Mickie Most). The innovative album titled Truth (Epic Records, 1968), re-cast typical blues-rock as a harder, faster, more brilliant and syncopated sound (Beck's Bolero, with Keith Moon as drummer, John Paul Jones & Jimmy Page, Blues Deluxe, Rock My Plimsoul, I Ain't Superstitio! us). A few months after the debut of Led Zeppelin, Beck did none other than insist on his vision of a blues-rock that is vigorous and captivating on Beck-ola (Epic, 1969), which became another placard of the rise of hard-rock (Spanish Boots, Plynth).
Beck was involved in an automobile accident and when he returned to the music scene, he was not quite the same. Rough & Ready (1971) with Cozy Powell as drummer, resulted in a burning
I've been Used, but his most emotional piece was the sad and criptic Raynes Park Blues. The Jeff Beck Group (1972) also recorded Ice Cream Cakes and the instrumental piece Definitely Maybe. Masters of Rock is an anthology of the years 1969-1972.
After a hiatus, during which his time was wasted on the mediocre Beck Bogart & Appice, Beck displayed the "tour de force" instrumental album Blow by Blow (Epic 1975) which belonged more to Jazz Fusion than Rock Music (Freeway Jam, Constipated Duck, You Know What I Mean). Wired (1976) made a valid post-script (but none of the songs were his). These two albums are milestones of rock guitar, revolutionizing the pentatonic scale and the abused jazz-rock language. This period of artisticartistic success ended rather meloncholy with With The Jan Hammer Group (1977) and There and Back (1980), which contained many brilliant pieces, among them The Pump and Final Peace (both written by keyboardist Tony Hymas), and then Jeff Beck was forgotten by the public who preferred Eric Clapton.
After many years of silence, Flash (1985), was a disappointment. Beck's guitar sounded gagged and the the tracks (sung) were second-hand pop music and flirted with dance music. Guitar Shop (1989) instead unleashed Beck's best guitar of his career: the epic Stand On It and the speed-metal of sling-shot.
(Hymas contributed the hybrid reggae-surf Behind the Veil)
Beckology (1991) is an anthology of Beck's entire career.
After the sound track of Frankie's House (1992), Crazy Legs (1993) is a tribute to Gene Vincent's lead guitarist, Cliff Gallup.
Who Else (Epic, 1999) brought Beck's guitar to the style of the 90's, to the cold techno-funk of What Mama Said and Hipnotica, to the world beat of Psycho Sam and Blast From The East, and to the grunge sound of Space For the Papa. He followed it up with You Had It Coming (2000) and Jeff (2003).
