Source text - Spanish Los premios literarios poseen una complejidad e interés intrínsecos: aunque a priori cualquier autor pueda presentar su novela a las convocatorias que editoriales, fundaciones y organismos oficiales formulan regularmente, a nadie se le escapa la conveniente circunscripción de estilo y temática de una obra en según qué concurso. Dicho de otro modo: el mismo texto que ganaría por unanimidad un premio, sería totalmente ninguneado en otro certamen diferente. Algunos piensan que esto es debido –tiene sentido– a que en cada ocasión existe un jurado distinto, con una trayectoria y unos intereses temáticos bien diferenciados. Otros, los menos inocentes –o los malpensados, directamente—, estiman que una editorial es una empresa y que, por tanto, necesita de una cierta plusvalía para poder asegurar su supervivencia.
Translation - English Literary prizes have an intrinsic complexity and human-interest value. In theory, any author may present a novel to the publishers, foundations and institutions that hold competitions in literature. But, judging by the styles and themes of many of the works that are submitted, some are clearly custom-written with the purpose of winning a particular prize. This means that a text that would win one prize by unanimous vote, could be completely ignored by the judges of another. Some believe (and this makes sense) that this is due to the fact that each contest has a different panel of judges, a different intent and different thematic preferences. And the less naive – or more cynical – consider that a publishing house is a business which therefore needs to reach a certain level of profitability in order to survive.
