The second annual Tarabya Translation Prize will be awarded this October in İstanbul, the organizers of the prize, given jointly by the Turkish and German governments, said this month.

The German and Turkish governments launched the Tarabya Translation Prize last year with an aim to recognize and encourage the contribution made to the intellectual and cultural relations between the two countries by way of literary translation, and also to support the translation of more literary works.

The awards, financed by Turkey’s Culture and Tourism Ministry and the German Foreign Ministry, recognize the best literary works translated from German into Turkish and vice versa.

The 2011 awards will be handed out on Oct. 31 at a ceremony at the historic Aya İrini Museum, the Culture and Tourism Ministry said on its website.

The winners are decided by two independent panels of judges, each comprising of five members made up of authors, publishers and literary critics. Information about the nomination process can be found on the website, www.kygm.gov.tr.

The award carries a cash prize of 7,500 euros. Two additional cash prizes of 5,000 euros will also be granted to up-and-coming literary translators.
