Hi Everybody,

I don't know about anybody else, but I often find it can be somewhat difficult to find appropriate new dictionaries when I get a job in a new or very specific field. Amazon.com/.co.uk/.de are all very useful for finding the more common dictionaries such as Ernst, but I can't help but wonder if there are other dictionaries out there of which I need to be aware.

I, for one, would find it very interesting and helpful if other German to English translators would share their thoughts (good and bad) on various bilingual technical and scientific dictionaries (hard copy, CD ROM or online/electronic) that are out there. Please state the name, subject area and author/publisher, etc. (if known) as well as a short review.

To start the ball rolling, I will mention the Siemens "Wörterbuch industrielle Elektrotechnik, Energie- und Automatisierungstechnik". It is published by Siemens and is available from Amazon (UK) for £66.50. I bought this when doing a job about some plant being installed in a factory locally and found it very useful indeed. There is some overlap with Ernst as would be expected, but I would recommend it highly in terms of complementing Ernst in these specialist areas.

I hope this topic will prove a useful exercise and provide a handy resource for us all. With this in mind, please keep this to German to English technical and scientific dictionaries only.

Many thanks.

Dictionary and Referece section on ProZ Apr 2, 2009

Have you seen the new section on ProZ for dictionary reviews?

Maybe the developers could add a "call for entries" feature or something that would help with your request?
