Strip mining is used when the coal seam is near the surface.
Metalliferous ores are mined either on the surface or underground. In opencast mining, miners remove ore from shallowly covered surface or hillside deposits.
Non-metalliferous Mineral Mining
Mining companies generally use the same sort of methods to mine non-metalliferous minerals, such as potash or rock salt, as they do for metals. Because these deposits tend to be large with low unit value, companies usually choose low cost mining methods.
