This is a thesis on city and town squares and their original design:
"Sieht man von einigen historischen Beispielen ab, die bis in die Antike reichen, so hat gezielte Städteplanung erst im 19. Jahrhundert eingesetzt. Bewusst wurden *Prunkstrassen*und Plätze angelegt." I know exactly what's meant, but can't think of anything suitable. I'd be very grateful for any help!

agree  Francis Lee (X): or perhaps "grandiose" ? That said, I doubt your average Londoner or NYer would refer to "boulevards" .../ How about "majestic" or "high-profile" (hmmm, perhaps not ...) ? And "thoroughfares" is also an option
