French term

être séduit pour rêver

French to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
In a list of things that the customers of prestige brands want:

"Je veux être séduit pour rêver"

I can't phrase this in a way that doesn't sound silly!

Discussion

Sandra Petch (asker) Dec 20, 2006:
I should probably have specified this The sentence has to begin with "I".
Julie Barber Dec 20, 2006:
I can't see what's wrong with a fairly literal translation here. It would only be as silly as the French.
Sandra Petch (asker) Dec 20, 2006:
Hi Moira Anything luxury (basically, anything expensive!). Could be a leather bag, a piece of jewellery, shoes... These aren't "ordinary" customers: when they go into the store, they expect to get special treatment. Other items in the list are "Je suis unique" and "J'ai toujours raison" !! The idea of seduction and dreaming relates to the fact that the time they spend in the store must be an out-of-the-ordinary experience.

What kind of goods are we talking about here, Sandra?

(I'm looking for) the "wow" factor ....and more ideas....

I'm looking for something that captures my imagination

The "must have" factor

the stuff that fantasies are made of

It's got to grab me

I want the whole (shopping) experience to be the stuff of dreams

perhaps a bit OTT, but so's the French ;-)
Peer comment(s):

Silly as it looks

I think if you punctuate (and slightly modify) it - "Je veux être séduit .... séduit pour, pour rêver" and imagine it being said breathlessly, languorously, with a distant heavenward gaze ... then you can extract a meaning from it.

I want to be swept off my feet into a world of dreams ... where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see those nice young
Men in their clean white coats and
They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!

I want to be overwhelmed ... let into a dreamworld ... the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time [bis]

I want people fawning over me and giving me the impression they love and admire me.

I want people to be obsequious and subservient so I can imagine I'm the King of the World!

I want to be treated like the sad sulky star that I would be if I were famous, and not just filthy rich, and live out the rest of my pitiful, miserable existence in Michael Jackson's Neverland ...

Sad, innit, that people (think they) have to spend lots of money in order to be able to dream?

If you can imagine someone like Paris Hilton saying it, I expect you need to throw in a "like" and a "you know" or six.

Don't tempt me!
