English term

put to the sword

English to Polish Art/Literary Religion Medieval sources
Wystepuje to w trzech miejscach:

9.'Alas! O my great Lord of the elements!' said she. 'What makes you say alas?' said Adamnan, 'My being put to the sword on the battlefield and thrown into the torments of Hell. I know no one here or yonder who would do a kindness or show mercy to me save Adamnan, the Virgin Mary urging him thereto on behalf of the host of Heaven'.

(Tu kobieta zostala wskrzeszona przez Adamnana)

16. 'It shall not be in my time if it is done, ' said Loingsech Bregban, native of Fanait he was, of the race of Conall. 'An evil time when a man's sleep shall be murdered for a woman, that women should live, men should be slain. Put the deaf and dumb one to the sword, who asserts anything but that women shall be in everlasting bondage to the brink of Doom.'

17. These are the kings who then arose at the word of Loingsech to put Adamnan to the sword: Doelgus son of Oengus son of Dondfraech, high-king of Munster....etc.; these were all that were there of the kings of the western world. Adamnan took no sword with him to battle, but the Bell of Adamnan's Wrath, to wit, the little bell of Adamnan's alter-table. It is then Adamnan spoke these words:

Waham sie miedzy przysiega, wezwaniem do walki a przeszyciem szpada / mieczem. A moze w kazdym paragrafie znaczy to cos innego?

everlasIng - sorry about the typo
Caryl Swift Jan 15, 2007:
He/She who says anything else at all except that women should/shall be in everlastung bondage.
bartek Jan 15, 2007:
he deaf and dumb even while being put to the sword - pod groźba ścięcia / wytrzebienia
Malgorzata Kazmierczak (asker) Jan 15, 2007:
And the deaf and dumb even while being put to the sword would "say" that the woman will (and should) be in everlasting bondage...? Or that he/she would assert anything BUT that woman shall be... I don't know if I'm getting it right.
Caryl Swift Jan 15, 2007:
It occured to me later-maybe the confusion arose from something so simple that we didn't see it! 9 and 16 are passive verbs: in 9 someone else did it to her, in 16 it will be done to others, but 17 is active: the kings are going to do it to Adamnan :-)
Caryl Swift Jan 15, 2007:
But I'd have said that in verse 17,it's quite simply a matter of their decision to get rid of the troublemaker in the most permanent way possible.Rather like Henry II a few hundred years later:"Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?".
Malgorzata Kazmierczak (asker) Jan 14, 2007:
OK, I'm getting it slowly... Thanks a lot! Dzięki bardzo i do jutra, bo mi sie limit wyczerpal :-(((
Caryl Swift Jan 14, 2007:
Adamnan went into the battle armed with nothing but the symbols of his faith and in the next four verses he calls down some pretty unpleasant curses on them all, which seems to lead to a change of heart in his enemies as regards the status of women.
Caryl Swift Jan 14, 2007:
16.I'd have said that Loingsech is simply saying that anyone who agrees to women being anything but slaves until the end of the world shall be killed.
17.When Loingsech said that, the following kings joined him in the decision to kill Adamnan.
Malgorzata Kazmierczak (asker) Jan 14, 2007:
No tak, w pierwszym moze byc, ze zginela od miecza (nie byla skazana - raczej zmuszona do walki), ale w drugim to chyba byloby ciezko wyciagnac cos od gluchego i niemego, gdyby byl sciety. Raczej wyobrazam sobie, ze go przeszyto i wszystko wyspiewal. Pomocy!

1 Kings 2:8
And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I sware to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.

skazać na ścięcie, ściąc mieczem

Pamiętamy Zerwikaptur. W sytuacji pierwszej dałabym "zginąć od miecza".
