Discussion

Flavio Posse Apr 14, 2007:
Oh yes! the typo is in line 3...I must've been drinking.
Flavio Posse Apr 14, 2007:
never mind, there's no typo...and no, I haven't been drinking!
Flavio Posse Apr 14, 2007:
excuse the typo, in line 4 it should read "hear" not "here"
Flavio Posse Apr 14, 2007:
in the case at hand, where "Jesse" works, the courtroom is assigned criminal arraignments or "instrucción de cargos penales". And, by the way, the word penales needs to be translated because you also have "traffic arraignments" and these are not criminal
Flavio Posse Apr 14, 2007:
others hear preliminary hearings, or traffic arraignments, or prop. 36 (drugs), etc. So the courtroom to which the judge happens to be assigned mainly deals with a certain type of proceedings and that courtroom is known by the type of cases it deals with.
Flavio Posse Apr 14, 2007:
The origin of this context is the United States. In other countries it may be different, but here, Judges in Municipal and Superior Courts are assigned to a courtroom and they usually here certain types of proceedings. There are judges that hear Trials..

"sala de instrucción de cargos", and even "sala de instrucción" is good enough.

agree Joseph Tein : Hola, ché. I like your precise wording, as usual. Saludos.

Thank you, Joe. I hope you enjoyed the cruise, un abrazo.

agree JoseAlejandro : well, I've known some interesting clowns in my life.....ok, I know what you mean. : 0 ))

Play nice Jose, we need to educate without insulting. Thanks for your support.
agree Marcelo González : Me parece excelente, Flavio, the translation and your notes, alike; a clarification in regards to the English needed to be done, as well.

agree Joseph Tein : I don't think you need 'Criminales' because if there are 'cargos' then it's a criminal matter.

agree MikeGarcia : Ver mi agree a Flavio Posse.

It may be also "Juzgado de Instrucción", but there is another translation for it:

The Examining Courts (Juzgados de Instrucción):
Investigate and prepare criminal cases to be tried in other courts (Provincial Audiences and Criminal Courts).
Peer comment(s):

neutral Joseph Tein : You need to address that very specific word 'arraignment.'

disagree Flavio Posse : ...you will not find this in the dictionary because this is the way a court employee talks. But that is the meaning, and I as a court employee can tell you, that's what it is.
3 hrs
Exactly, these are the types of courts and not courtrooms!
