Il y avait aussi le fait que progressivement la langue anglaise remplaçait la langue française dans l’administration. Ce qui engendrait une rivalité entre les Blancs et les pro-Anglais. Il y a ainsi l’anecdote de la suppression du français à partir du 15 juillet 1847. *Pour marquer ce changement* vécu comme une grande perte, l'avocat X se fit un point d’honneur à plaider en français jusqu’à minuit le 14 juillet avant de passer à la langue anglaise juste après.
