Italian term or phrase: Funzione
I am having nightmares with this word in a text I'm working on, in some places it means "function", in others it seems to mean "office", as in the following segment: "L’Assistenza Tecnica identifica una Funzione operativa di Gruppo che include Tecnici qualificati distribuiti su più Funzioni e ubicati su più Siti aziendali."

department
Explanation:
I did a HR thing once with the same problem, but with the client sorted out that in some cases (which would seem to be your main problem) it meant department, which could mean a conglom of offices or different set-ups involving teams and/or people from a variety of offices.

Hope this helps! SUE

I actually plumbed for "Department" in the end, which appeared to fit the context better, though there were instances where "function" seemed more apt, and I then used that. Thanks Sue. Thanks again to all, and to Jim for all his input. Chris.

You could put it in this way"The Technical Assistance identifies a function Operational Group, which includes skilled technicians distributed across multiple functions and located across more business sites. this is only a suggestion

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi - Yes, thanks, I know, that's my problem, I don't know which applies, in this context. Here's another example: "TECNICI facenti parte della Funzione TSE (diretti ed esterni) il cui Responsabile risponde a Operation Staff." It could be Tech Services function OR Tech Services Office. The fact that it is almost always capitalised makes me think it's "Office", yet others thought it was "function", as per the first question I raised yesterday (Funzione Operativa di Gruppo). Arrrrrrrggghh!

Function

Explanation:
http://www.bizjobs.com/business_glossary.php

"Function - in the context of an organization, this means the job role or discipline, eg., sales, marketing, production, accounting, customer service, delivery, installation, technical service, general management, etc."

In Italian as in English it can be used to refer to the office or department which contains the function, just a the bottle you drink can be used to refer to all the whisk in it.
The capitals in your text will refer to actual offices, departments, or functions.

Just thinking about whiskey seems to have inebriated by typing. Correction: "... just as the bottle you drink can be used to refer to all the whisky in it ...". I'm not sure about always using "function", but you shouldn't be afraid of the word.

"Technical Assistance is a group operating function which includes skilled technicians from different functions which work on different sites in the company". "Technical Assistance" is in capitals because in addition to being a function, it is also an organisationa unit of the company in its organisation chart. What does the sentence mean. It means that this function will include people from other functions, like production, maintenance and repair, research and development, design and what have you.

agree  architran: Just say function every time

agree  Pompeo Lattanzi: Yes, unfortunately the term is used in both meanings, both in Ita and Engl. I'd suggest to preserve the "enthropy" by using "Function" every time, as per architran.
