Sollwertlaboratorien

Deutsch > Englisch Medizin Medizin (allgemein) Quality Assurance
This term is used in medical laboratory quality assurance:

Die Referenzinstitution muss über Referenzlaboratorien oder Sollwertlaboratorien in ausreichender Anzahl verfügen, die für die jeweiligen Aufgaben qualifiziert sind.

Discussion

Michael Dollman (asker) Jun 4, 2009:
To Susanne,
"calibtration laboratories" is not what is meant by Sollwertlaboratorien in this context. They are not calibrating.
I'll get back to you with more info from the horse's mouth (hopefully.
Marga Shaw Jun 4, 2009:
To Michael, Have you thought about "calibration laboratories"? This just crossed my mind in the context with set values or nominal values.
Michael Dollman (asker) Jun 4, 2009:
To Susanne,
Thanks for your contribution. The BÄK (who wrote the guidelines in question) at least draws a clear distinction between the types of lab (www.bundesaerztekammer.de/page.asp?his=1.120.121.1047.1053.... I'm not adamant on "empirical labs" its just that it fits the description. I'll get back to the BÄK on this. If I hear something interesting I'll mail you.
Marga Shaw Jun 4, 2009:
To Michael re. "empirical laboratories" All "empirical laboratories" I could reference seem to be based in the USA. On comparing what they have to offer with what "reference laboratories" do offer I cannot find any significant difference. This makes me wonder if "reference laboratories" is the more usual term used in European countries. However, "reference laboratories" can also be found in the USA.
In addition, I have difficulty to believe that "Referenzlaboratorien" primarily use the reference method to determine the target value whilst "Sollwertlaboratorien" are free to choose their method and that "the set value (Sollwert) is the mean value of all those obtained by the 'Sollwertlaboratien' ". IMO all laboratories should work to certain guidelines and hence should obtain both target and set values. I always looked upon reference laboratories as "leading" laboratories which set the standards for other labs. Where the "Sollwertlaboratorien" fit in still leaves me puzzled.
Marga Shaw Jun 4, 2009:
Reference laboratories vs. ? So far I have never heard or seen anything else other than "reference laboratories". However, there does not seem to exist a generally accepted definition. Perhaps Susanne's suggestion of "different types", i.e. "different types of reference laboratories" would do it. Indeed, there exist different types of reference laboratories such as for genetics, microbiology, chemical analysis to name just three of them.
Michael Dollman (asker) Jun 4, 2009:
Referenzlaboratorien vs. Sollwertlaboratorien
I checked on this distinction. Referenzlaboratorien use the reference method for determining the target value (Zielwert) of a measurement parameter, whereas Sollwertlaboratorien are free to choose their method. The sollwert is the mean value of all those obtained by the Sollwertlaboratorien. Maybe Sollwertlaboratorien > empirical laboratory
Any input most welcome. Thanks for your help so far.
Michael Dollman (asker) Jun 3, 2009:
Yes Harald, this is the crux of the dilemma. If Referenzlaboratorien had not been there, I would have jumped for "reference laboratory".
I can't see in the doc (from BÄK) any way of distinguishing the two types of lab.

standards laboratories

...might be a useful (more or less descriptive) term for this purpose.

"A measurement standards laboratory is a laboratory of metrology which establishes standards for a country or organisation", is what Wikipedia says about standards laboratories. Probably close enough to what the Bundesärztekammer defines it to be.
