Spanish to English Bus/Financial Finance (general)
Hi Guys, I was hoping you could help me with an expression from the Dominican Republic. ...

Specifically, I'm having trouble with this part: "provocar la colocación de sellos sobre los bienes y valores de la compañía"
Sounds like they are talking about putting a claim on the company assests. -- Could you please help? --
Million thanks in advance.

James A. Walsh Sep 23, 2010:
"Lay claim" is a legal term http://www.audioenglish.net/dictionary/lay_claim.htm
And I think in this context it is stating that "no heirs, successors or creditors of a shareholder can 'lay claim' to any of the company's property or assets..." [and by stating 'lay claim', it is implicit that, if challenged, it will have to be carried out legally]
AllegroTrans Sep 23, 2010:
"seals" Something tells me this is about some legal measure such as registering liens against assets, not simply laying claims to assets
I am not sure of the correct expression

sellos = seal off

Hi,

I think that the document intends to maintain everybody out of the company's direction and control except for the shareholders. So the document intends to ward off the heirs of a deceased shareholder and does not allow them to take preemptive measures such as sealing off an asset of the company (like a building or office, etc.).

lay claim to / assume / take on - any of the company's property or assets

My take on your text. I've listed the 3 options according to my personal preference.

Suerte.
