English term or phrase: we are humbled by it
I'm one of the lucky ones. I came home. My father (ancien ministre de la Défense britannique) supported the invasion and the war that followed, an extension of which is still going on in Afghanistan. My family have had a taste of what Britain Forces' and Iraqi families have gone through these past few years, and we are HUMBLED BY IT. My heart goes out to those families, on both sides, whose loved ones will never come home.

Comment traduiriez-vous "we are humbled by it" dans ce contexte ?

Explanation:
To be humbled by something here is more like to be put to shame by something, in that they made a song and dance about their suffering which eventually had a happy ending, whereas many people have lost loved ones for ever.

disagree  Tony M: Regardless of the FR, I think your explanation misinterprets the source text.

-> I don't think so at all. Feelings of guilt assail them...Maybe shame is a bit strong, but I don't think I've misinterpreted the source text at all.

...et cela nous a ouvert les yeux.

Explanation:
