English term

craftly uncanniness

English to Italian Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Testo sulle streghe.

Nature in its occult aspect, the **craftly uncanniness** behind the semblance of things, is embodied in the witch. She creates illusions, is a caster of spells, a mistress of disguise.

Grazie.

Alla fine ho tradotto con "mistero creativo".
Lisa Jane May 3, 2011:
yes-I reckon it's quite a new usage.
Sarah Jane Webb May 3, 2011:
Thanks ljane I've never come across this term, which sounds peculiar to my (Brit) ears. Being an expat, I might not become aware of neologisms until they gain reasonably widespread popularity.

ref 4 Sarah As yourself- can't find a dictionary entry but there are countless examples on the web (US + UK) of craftly both before a noun and more often before a past participle-hope it feeds your curiosity:) Here are a few eg.s

For Bram Bogart, William Tillyer, Bruce McLean and Ivor Abrahams the absence of /a craftly orthodoxy/ around clay in the Western modernist tradition has enabled a free flow of ideas from their work in other media.

In a word, he was a born Metaphysical, and this would show in all his work, less in his poetry, sometimes in his essays and editorials, always in his fiction: the structure of words reflected the structure of all /craftly sentences/
Lisa Jane May 3, 2011:
@Sarah Yes it's an interesting one-I do not actually have a reference but will look in to it. I think it is either an American spelling of craftily-often the vowels are ommitted or a neologism formed by taking craft and adding the ly adverb ending-I have heard it used and seen it on US sites it even sounds right-to my UK English ear...but I could be wrong. Craftily with an 'i' to me has most commonly the meaning of 'cunningly' while craftly gives the idea of 'with craftmanship'. Words are not set in stone after all...who knows
Sarah Jane Webb May 3, 2011:
@ljane I'm genuinely interested in what you say re 'craftly'. I have searched the web extensively (OEL, Webster, Free Online Dictionary, Google), and the only 'Craftly' I can find is the name of a brand. Could you post a reference pls?
Ernestine Shargool May 3, 2011:
Shorter Oxford English Dictionary: 'Craftly': non è riportato

Crafty: 2: skilful, dexterous, clever, ingenious OE;
Crafty: 3 (The current use): cunning, artful; of actions, etc.: showing craft ME

Craftily: skilfully, artfully

Lisa Jane May 3, 2011:
craftly can be used as an adjective... craftly-means artful or craft-like so it can be used both in front of a noun and a verb form. Eg: a craftly composition = a composition which is well crafted
craftly composed = artfully composed. The adverb craftily has a different meaning.
Sarah Jane Webb May 3, 2011:
@ Caterina imo si tratta sicuramente di un refuso per 'crafty': davanti ad un sostantivo ('uncanniness') può esserci solo un aggettivo ('crafty', appunto) e non un avverbio ('craftily').
Caterina Rebecchi (asker) May 3, 2011:
Nel testo c'è scritto proprio "craftly".
Alessandro Drenaggi May 3, 2011:
scusa intendi "crafty" o "craftily"?
