French term

conge (not congé)

French to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals production of pharmaceuticals

I cannot find anything anywhere referring to this term in French. Might it be borrowed directly from English?

Discussion

Howard Sugar Aug 27, 2011:
I found this in a section on making liqueurs "Blending includes the addition of sweetening, and coloring matters, other flavors, smoothening and softening agents, etc., to the distilled flavored alcohol. In France it is very often carried out in a hermetically sealed cylindrical copper vessel called
a conge, see Fig. 45.
http://www.archive.org/stream/chemistryandtech030560mbp/chem... . It suggest "blending vessel" as a possible translation.

If this were the brewing industry, I would say that you could use "fermenter" for the object in question.

As for the translation, see if you like any of the following synonyms for "vase": alembic, bag, beaker, bin, bottle, bowl, box, bucket, bunker, caisson, can, canister, canteen, capsule, carafe, carton, cask, casket, cauldron, chamber, chest, churn, cistern, cradle, crate, crock, dish, ewer, firkin, flask, hamper, hod, hopper, humidor, hutch, jar, jeroboam, jug, kettle, magnum, package, packet, pail, pit, pod, poke, pot, pottery, pouch, purse, receptacle, reliquary, repository, sac, sack, scuttle, stein, storage, tank, tub, utensil, vase , vat, vessel, vial

Good luck.

I also found " CONGE, subst. masc.

A.− DISTILL.
How you might translate this in English, I have no idea
Howard Sugar Aug 27, 2011:
I found this as a definition. "

kettle

Given that we're talking about starch paste, I did a little digging and found thousands of hits for "starch paste kettle"--apparently it's the industry term for the container used in pharmaceutical production.

agree Bourth (X) : I'd vote for "kettle".

blending vessel

This website calls a conge à trancher a "liqueur blending vessel".

www.archive.org/stream/.../chemistryandtech030560mbp_djvu.t...
LIQUEUR BLENDING VESSEL (CONGE A TRANCHER) . . . .195 46. Cone Filter for Liqueurs 199 47. Wire Mesh Filter for Liqueurs 199 48. Filter of Fig. 47 in Use 199 49. ...

Also, coloring could have been performed in HERMETICALLY SEALED CONTAINERS called “CONGE À TRANCHER” that would hold the heated blanche absinthe distillate in contact with the coloring herbs before being passed through a “tamis de crin”, to filter the product before reduction.

Would just "blending vessel" suit your text?
