acta de calificación

Spanish to English Other Education / Pedagogy
Hello. This is from some student information on postgraduate programmes at a Spanish university:

Going into UK English.

Thanks for your help
Simon

Discussion

Helena Chavarria Aug 24, 2012:
James The only problem is that students don't have access to the information - it belongs to the university/school/educational centre. It's a sort of database of all the marks awarded during the academic year, which is created during an examination board meeting. I can remember only too well when I was studying in Spain and I had to wait at least five weeks for my exam resuts. Although I didn't know when I would get the results, I knew the date of the 'actas', which meant I would have my results before that date.
I think that in the UK students accept their marks, but in Spain if students don't agree with their results, they tend to ask for revisions with the hope of passing an exam. Once the actas have been signed, a result cannot be changed.

What about Student Record? Just revisiting this briefly and this came to mind. http://tinyurl.com/c7huhuo
Helena Chavarria Aug 23, 2012:
My husband's a secondary school teacher and he always leaves everything to the last moment! He marks the exams on the Sunday evening before the 'acta' is held. The teachers attend a meeting and each one sings out the marks s/he has given each student. The information is recorded by a person and the term's work is officially brought to an end. The records are kept by the school. I'm pretty sure the information is sent to the Ministry of Education but it is also used to draw up each student's transcript, among other things. I suppose you could say that the 'actas' are the minutes of the examination board meeting.
Simon Bruni (asker) Aug 23, 2012:
Thanks everyone The 'acta' must be a document rather than a meeting (though of course it could be a document resulting from a meeting):
La Secretaría de Alumnos de Posgrado facilitará las actas de calificación para que sean firmadas
Dennis Mende (X) Aug 23, 2012:
Well. After some research it seems to be the evaluation of a university professor if a student has passed the exams or not.
Dennis Mende (X) Aug 23, 2012:
I understand it that it is some kind of numerus clausus for postgraduates.
John Guzman Aug 23, 2012:
The way I understand the text this has to do with "report cards." I think what makes it a little bit difficult to understand without more context is that a system used to track the grades seems to be involved. "Apertura" seems to refer to actually begining to track the grades that are then finalized and signed after 4 trimesters.

evaluation of qualification

After some research I would give this a try. It seems in Spain most Universities use a system where the professors enter the marks of their students electronically and they have to do this process in a certain span of time.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Helena Chavarria : Yes, but the 'acta' is a meeting which is attended by the all members of the department a few days AFTER they have finished marking the exams. It's when the marks are officially recorded in the university's records.

Qualification meeting

I'm afraid I can't find a better way of expressing what I want to say.

I've been trying to find an equivalent type of meeting, but universities in the UK seem to use a different system .

This type of 'acta' in Spain refers to a meeting in which the lecturers/teaching staff responsible for marking the different exams state the mark each student has obtained. The mark is then recorded by a person (in a book? an electronic file?). The information is then kept by the university in its records.

I don't know if this reference will help you.

results

I think that something as simple as "results" would work in this context: "elaboración de las actas de calificación" would become "publication of results" and "será el responsable de las actas de calificación de las asignaturas que coordina." would be "is responsible for listing the results for the subjects he/she coordinates" or something similar. I'm just thinking back to my university days and what we actually said. Spanish is often much more formal.

"apertura de las cualificaciones", which you didn't ask about, could be something as simple as the "results list"

record of marks

I'm fairly sure they're called this in the UK anyway. Googles pretty good in the plural too.

Record of Marks

A record of marks is an email containing the marks you have achieved in the academic year.

As an undergraduate campus-based student you will receive this email in mid August (or mid October if you have taken resits). This is for notification only and is not an official document.

If you have an error on your record of marks please contact the Assessments Office.

Academic Transcript

This sounds to me like an Academic Transcript - a document containing a record of all your grades, which must be specially requested, is called an 'Academic Transcript'
Example sentence:

A transcript is an official summary of a student\'s academic performance and progress to date.

Transcripts are provided in sealed envelopes with the University stamp to prove that the document is authentic

disagree carioquita : it does not have any grades nor subjects...
