English term

MA/MFA

English to Spanish Other Education / Pedagogy Art exhibit introduction
Back to the essay writen by the art museum curator. He mentions that the artist got his BFA, then his MA and his MFA. For MA, I normally use "maestría", but considering that MFA follows, I need to be more specific. I think "maestría en arte" sounds misleading, since it's really in "humanidades" or "letras". Your opinion, please. The whole sentece says:

"He received his BFA in printmaking in 1992 from the University of X and his MA (1995) and MFA (1996) in printmaking from the University of Y.

Gracias a todos.

Tienes toda la razón Charles, no sé cómo no me di cuenta antes. Muchísimas gracias por tu contribución. Feliz Navidad!
Charles Davis Dec 20, 2012:
As I understand it, these two master's degrees were both in fine art, in fact they were both in printmaking. You certainly can take an MA in fine art. It isn't that the MA was in humanities and the MFA in fine art. The difference is that the MFA is more advanced and more professionally-oriented. I think you should say something like "MA (Maestría, 1995) y MFA (Maestría Avanzada en Bellas Artes, 1996) en la especialidad de Grabado".

Since this person took the MFA just one year after the MA, maybe what happened is that he/she took some further practical modules and upgraded his/her MA to an MFA.
Charles Davis Dec 20, 2012:
Hi teju As far as I can tell, the point is that an MA is a standard master's degree (as you know), which can be in any of a wide range of subjects, not even just Humanities, but also Social Sciences, for example (at least in many universities). So I think you just put "maestría" or "máster" (the former is more usual in Latin America, I think).

The MFA is a more advanced degree than the MA (reflected in the fact that this person took it afterwards) and of a different character. It also takes longer: 2-3 years for the MFA versus 1-2 years for the MA, typically. The MFA is the highest practical art degree, focused on advanced artistic practice in a specialized field for future professional artists. It has a higher proportion of art courses and a lower proportion of liberal arts courses than the MA. The MFA is regarded as a terminal degree, which the MA certainly isn't.

So I wonder whether you could call the MFA a "maestría avanzada en Bellas Artes".

@ teju Me parece bien.

Hi teju Sorry, I appear to have misunderstood then... I think that it varies from University to University, but have a look here. I am inclined to agree with your observation.

teju (asker) Dec 19, 2012:
What I meant to say is that I think Master of Arts is a misnomer, it's really not a degree in "arts", it's "humanidades" and that can lead to confusion.
teju (asker) Dec 19, 2012:

Thank you Teju. Charles deserves all the credit for solving your dilemma! Un abrazo.
