Spanish term

clavar (in this context)

I'd like to find an expression with the same linguistic register. TIA!

Suerte!

leaving (them) in the lurch

Etc. There are lots of ways to express it:
"...letting down thousands of savers in the country down";
"...sinking thousands of savers in its wake...";
Or more directly tabloid: "shafting thousands of the country's savers in the process..."
The notion is that the entity went bell up and left the savers

I'd agree with Taña and Lisa if the financial mismanagement in question was DELIBERATE rather than merely the result of ineptitude.

Bankrupt: financially ruined; "a bankrupt company"; "the company went belly-up".

I like it. Thank you, Neil!
Peer comment(s):

In fact, it was deliberate. Thank you, Lisa.
Peer comment(s):

agree neilmac : Although slang, I'd say "ripping off" is Ok in most contexts nowadays, although it suggests deliberate intent.
