Mi intento: "...is an honest, respectful, hardworking person with no bad habits."

Thank you for your help!

Asker: Thank you! I think I am going to go for this as its broad enough.

Asker: I really like this option, "not given to vice" Thank you! Will be using this one.

neutral  philgoddard: Would you really say this on a police officer's retirement letter?
1 hr
  -> Like me, you did not read the context properly as it is from a "retired policeman" (not a retirement letter). I just took it as a police reference, whereas the letter probably relates to a retired cop's employee, so Andrea/Neil's proposal might work best

disagree  Rosa Paredes: I agree with Philgoddard. Saludos!

  -> me too

agree  MollyRose: Appropriate for the context, a common phrase, and is an accurate translation. It especially fits for a retiring police officer, who really shouldn't "be given to vice." Or simply "without vice."
2 hrs
  -> Thank you!

neutral  neilmac: Sorry, but these refs are still too "new agey" for me. And I think it sounds a bit Victorian...
12 hrs
  -> Well, one of my refs refers to Gen X people?

Another option?

Those most unfriendly to the legate were won over by his irreproachable conduct.

Inchbald was a person of a very remarkable character, lovely, poor, with unusual mental powers and of irreproachable conduct.

Asker: Thank you for your answer. I think "beyond reproach" and "irreproachable conduct" work very well here as well; it's the appropriate register and meaning without sounding too literal.

Your own suggestion, which I think works fine in this case.

Another option could be "clean living":

Andrea: I don't think "clean living" necessarily denotes rehab. it can refer to mental 'purity' or not drinking, smoking etc to excess. I strongly recommend NOT using "with no faults", unless we're talking about the Buddha or similar...

NB: Cultural caveat. The obsession with abstinence from recreational drugs such as tobacco, alcohol, etc is a very USA thing. I can assure you that "clean living" is not knee-jerkily associated with rehab, at least not where I come from (the так называемые United Kingdom).

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you for your prompt answer! In my search, I found 'clean living' so glad you bring that up. I didn't use it because I thought it implied the person had undergone some sort of rehab, what do you think? I think I am going to go with 'with no faults' as it's broad enough to encompass any wrong doings. or bad habits... except I feel it transmits some sort of judgement. Anyway, thanks again!

agree  Charles Davis: A clean living person is clean and alive; a clean-living person lives a clean life. "Beyond reproach" is way too broad. I think "no bad habits" conveys the right message, though strictly speaking not all bad habits are "vicios" (picking your nose?).
1 hr
  -> If he has a clean record, you could say he's beyond reproach, but I do see your point.

agree  philgoddard: It just shows how opinions can differ, because "beyond reproach" is the only one of these suggestions that I like.
1 hr
  -> I think it works fine for a reference letter or similar, though I understand Charles' reticence.

agree  JudyK: I was going to suggest 'clean-living' but see that it's also been suggested here
