Pelo que entendi, isso quer dizer que o intruso abriu a fechadura usando ferramentas especiais. Como dizer isso em PT-Br? Pensei em "abriu a fechadura à força", mas não tenho certeza. Obrigado!

Considerações Finais Obrigado, João Luís. A sua explicação faz sentido. "Gazua" é a minha tradução favorita. Descartei "arrombar" de cara porque isso implicaria o uso de força, o que não parece ser o caso do presente contexto. I think if you use "abriu a fechadura com uma gazua", it's too specific. Gazua is a tool, picking a lock doesn't necessarily mean with this tool, it can be done in many ways. When you say arrombar a fechadura it almost automatically implies you're picking a lock (doesn't matter how, there are different ways to do this), or else the phrase would be "arrombar a porta".

scratches around the keyhole - gazua made! That is why I suggested the phrase. A gazua is not delicate and would certainly cause the scratches around the keyhole. They keys would not do that.

Dúvida Não acredito que exatidão técnica seja tão importante neste caso, pois se trata de uma tradução literária. De qualquer forma, estou indeciso entre três opções apresentadas com relação à maneira de abrir a fechadura: com uma gazua, com uma chave micha/mixa, ou com um chave falsa. Destas, na opinião dos colegas, qual apresenta maior probabilidade de produzir arranhões em volta da fechadura? Obrigado.

Não sei se é algo regional, mas sempre ouvi em Pernambuco usarem o termo arromar a fechadura/cadeado para esse tipo de situação também.

agree Mayara Herrero : A palavra arrombar sozinha implicaria uso de força. Porém no caso a tradução de pick a lock é arrombar a fechadura mesmo. Se fosse só por meio da força seria arrombar a porta. Arrombar a fechadura é força-la a abrir, não importa como.

Em PT-PT, diria assim, dependendo do contexto, caso realmente o "ladrão" tenha utilizado alguma chave falsa:

Destrancou a porta

Destrancou a porta seria uma boa tradução para o termo, já que "picked the lock" sugere a não utilização de chave e destrancar deixaria o termo mais aberto a interpretações (poderia não utilizar chave para isso).
