Vado per "assonanza" con il termine che conosco e che ho anche riscontrato su dizionari: "sundowner s. 1 (austr.) vagabondo (che arriva al calar del sole ad una fattoria solo per scroccare cibo e letto)".

Direi che potrebbe trattarsi di "gite senza meta specifica" oppure di "girovagare". È solo un'idea.
