Spanish term

en las afueras del poblado

Non-PRO Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Literature.
I would like to know the best translation of this phrase from Latin American Spanish into American English. Translator colleagues from Spain, feel free to send me your suggestions as well. This is a translation about the story of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves. Is okay to translate as He was living in a farm was outside of the village?

Here is the full paragraph for your review:

Dec 27, 2021 10:13: Cecilia Gowar changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (1): Marcelo González

Non-PRO (3): Carol Gullidge, María Perales, Cecilia Gowar

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

On continuation:
'AliBaba had been missing for a couple of days, whilst rumours of a band of dangerous thieves spread through the village, in fear of the life of AliBaba. His wife went to find his wicked brother, Semes, who fancied his chances with AliBaba's wife, of whom he could take advantage in his absence.'
Example sentence:

'Se hacían dos días en que no se vio al AliBaba mientras se pasaban entre el pueblo rumores de una banda de ladrones peligrosos,

Su mujer se fue en busca de su hermano malo, Semes, quien se apetecía por aprovecharse por la ocasión de estar con su mujer durante la ausencia de AliBaba.'
